Hire period, full bins and swaps

How Long Can I Keep a Skip?
There is no single answer, because the hire period is part of the quote. What matters is that it is written down before the bin is dropped.

The two ways operators price a period
Some price a set number of days and then a daily rate. Others price the bin until it is collected. Both are normal; the difference matters when a job runs long.
Ask which one you are being quoted, and what the daily rate is if the first applies. A quote that does not say is a quote that will be argued about.
When the bin is full
Call for collection. You should not be paying for days you do not use, and a full bin sitting on site is a bin nobody can work around. The operator collects, weighs and tips it, and settles any over-weight charge.
Swaps on a longer job
On a renovation that runs for weeks, a swap is the practical arrangement: the full bin leaves and an empty one takes its place. Ask for it at booking. Arranging a swap after the bin is full usually means waiting for the next available truck.
A swap can be cheaper than a second bin standing beside the first, and it keeps the site working.
Overfilling
A bin filled above the rim cannot be covered or secured. Operators may refuse to lift it, and a refusal is a delay you pay for twice. Fill to the top, not above it.
The permit and the duration
Where a bin stands on a public road, the municipality's consent is for a stated period. Drakenstein and Langeberg both approve a verge container "for a specified duration". If the job runs longer than the consent, the consent has to be extended, not assumed.
Ending the hire
Agree the collection day, confirm the bin will be accessible, and check that nothing has been stacked in front of it. A collection that fails on access is charged as a second trip.
What a difference a day makes
A hire period that runs two days too long can cost as much as the delivery. Ask the daily rate when the quote arrives, and compare two quotes by the total for the days you actually expect to need — not by the headline price for the shortest period offered.
On a farm or a venue, the days are set by a season or a booking, so the period is known in advance. On a renovation, the bin is usually needed for longer than the first estimate.
The practical arrangements that protect the period
Agree the collection day in writing. Keep the bin accessible — nothing stacked in front of it, nothing parked on the approach. Cover the bin, because wet garden waste and soil get heavier. And call before the bin is overfull rather than after, because a bin that cannot be covered may not be lifted.
Where a bin stands on a public road, the consent is for a stated duration. If the job runs longer, extend the consent rather than assuming it covers the extra weeks.
A short checklist before the bin is dropped
Agree the period in writing, the daily rate if the period is exceeded, the collection day, and who is responsible for access on that day. Cover the bin. Keep the load within the weight allowance. Call before it is overfull.
If the bin stands on a street, check the consent covers the whole period and that the bin still carries the marking and cover the by-law requires. A consent that has lapsed is the same as no consent when a neighbour complains.
What happens at the end
The operator collects, weighs and tips the load, and any over-weight charge is settled against the allowance in the quote. Ask for the weighbridge figure if the load was close to the limit: it is the number the tip fee was calculated on.
Questions before you book
Short answers. Where the answer depends on the operator, the page says so instead of inventing a number.
How long can I keep a 6m³ skip?
As long as the quote says. Some operators include a set number of days, others price until collection. Ask which.
What if I need it longer?
Pay the daily rate or extend the period with the operator before the agreed collection date.
Can I get a swap instead of a second bin?
Yes, if you ask when you book. It is the normal arrangement on a long renovation.
The request
Request a bin for your address
The town and one line about the job — what you are clearing, the size, the date and any access constraint. The town decides which operator sees it, and the price comes back as a quote, not a guess.
- One form. No account, no card, no obligation.
- A local operator confirms the size, the hire period and the price.
- Nothing is dropped until you accept the quote.
The request desk is not the skip company: the operator who quotes you delivers and tips the bin. The footer of every page says the same thing.
