Skip hire in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch has the district's densest mix of renovation, student accommodation and older housing stock, and one landfill that receives builder's rubble and garden waste. A skip here is usually a renovation or a lease-end clear-out.
Residents can drop garden waste at the landfill. Builder's rubble is accepted there and crushed, then sold on and collected by contractors. What that means for a skip: the tip fee for rubble and the tip fee for general waste are not the same, and a mixed load is priced as the more expensive of the two.
Where the waste goes
The Stellenbosch Landfill Site on Devon Valley Road is the town's licensed facility. It takes garden waste, builder's rubble, general household waste and household hazardous waste in containers. General waste from the municipality has been redirected to a private landfill in the City of Cape Town area at Vissershok since 2019, and rubble is crushed and stockpiled on site until contractors collect it. The town's drop-off detail is in Stellenbosch Municipality's annual report (Stellenbosch annual report 2023, PDF).
Permission to put a bin on the street
A bin that stands on a public road or verge needs the municipality's written consent. Stellenbosch's Integrated Waste Management By-law 2020, section 9(11), says a person who wishes to place a receptacle for building waste on a public road “ must apply to the Municipality for written consent ”. Section 9(12) then requires the receptacle to be marked with the name, address and telephone number of the person responsible, fitted with reflecting chevrons or reflectors, and covered at all times except when it is being filled or emptied.
The by-law is published with the Western Cape government (Stellenbosch waste by-law, PDF). A bin on private property does not need consent; a bin on the street does.
Access and practical details
The older parts of Stellenbosch have narrow streets, mature trees and walls hard against the pavement, and several areas carry heritage status — Stellenbosch's land-use by-law lists impact on heritage resources as a decision criterion for land development. Practically: a 6m³ or 8m³ bin needs a clear standing place and a truck that can get out again. Say if the property is behind a gate, up a steep driveway, or on a street where parking is already tight.
Which size for the job
A kitchen or bathroom renovation in an older house usually wants the 6m³. A single student unit's move-out fits a 2m³. A whole-house renovation or a block of units cleared at once needs the 8m³, and should be booked as a swap rather than one bin held for weeks.
A job this town books
Stellenbosch's student accommodation cycle is the town's own skip season: end-of-year and end-of-lease clear-outs in December and again in February, often several units on one booking. If that is your job, say how many units and whether they are on one property. A single 6m³ for four flats will not finish the job.
Renovation and heritage
Much of Stellenbosch's housing is older than the skip industry that serves it. Expect thick walls, heavier rubble and materials that do not break down as neatly as modern brickwork. If the house predates the 1980s, ask about asbestos before anything is stripped — asbestos is not a skip item and needs a specialist removal contractor.
For plumbing and garage work that generates the same rubble, the Cape fleet's plumber and garage-door services work in the same streets.
The student calendar and the heritage streets
Stellenbosch has two skip seasons a year and both are crowded: December's move-outs and February's move-ins. Landlords who book in October get the bin in December; landlords who call in December wait.
The town's other constraint is its streets. Older parts of Stellenbosch have narrow roads, mature trees and heritage status as a land-development consideration. A bin on a public road there needs written consent as well as somewhere it will not block a doorway.
Questions before you book
Short answers. Where the answer depends on the operator, the page says so instead of inventing a number.
Do you deliver skips in Stellenbosch?
Yes. Send the request with the town, the load and the date, and an operator who covers Stellenbosch comes back with a price. If no operator can reach your address, we will tell you rather than take the booking.
How soon can a bin reach Stellenbosch?
Stellenbosch is the shortest run in the district — the landfill is on Devon Valley Road — so the drop is usually the easy half of the booking. The collection is the half to book early, because the town is busy with rentals and renovations.
What should not go in a Stellenbosch bin?
Asbestos, tyres, lead-acid batteries, gas bottles, liquid waste, paint and solvent, and anything explosive or flammable. Those exclusions come from the national landfill norms and standards, not from the operator's preference. The by-law also prohibits mixing building waste into the household stream, so a strip-out and a house clean need different bins.
